Fall Studies
For the past 10 years or so I’ve been implementing the concept of fall studies. The idea is to encourage personal growth through the freedom of learning… it’s like looking over the course catalog for college only it’s potentially free and the catalog is infinite.
Every August I sit down and write a list of things I’d like to study in the “Fall Semester.” This has been japanese, a music writing program, guitar, yoga, Ruby programming, etc. I then pick one of them to focus on – the rest can be a hobby but not a focused study – and I go to it.
This year I’m trying to choose between:
- Advanced Reason (music program I’m well acquainted with already)
- Pixel Art (I know the basics but would like to dedicate time to it)
- Guitar composition (I’ve fallen into ‘jamming’ mode and want to write some songs down)
- Technical Pen illustration (I’ve been really into drawing really detailed images lately. This is 50/50 actual technical pen and digital pen)
Try it out! I find it’s a terrific way to get excited about the end of summer.
