Alissa’s Fall Studies

Obviously, I got this idea from Erik. I’ve known him for six falls now, coming up on seven, and every fall he’s chosen something new to dive into — teaching himself how to design and code web sites from scratch, making electronic and other music, various types of art. Every year he gets really into it for many months and ends up being quite successful.

Meanwhile I was doing a lot of school learning, but I always admired the ambition, discipline, and dedication it took to achieve his fall study goals.

I’m not in school anymore, but there are uncountable things left to learn and enjoy. So this year I’m following in Erik’s footsteps and picking up my own fall studies.

Since I work at Boston University, it’s pretty easy to take classes at a low cost. So I’m going to try to take an Italian class this fall. I took it in college, and it’s been a long-time goal to become fluent. I haven’t spoken Italian in a long while, so I need a bit of review — and then to move forward even further. The class is almost full and I still need the professor’s signature to take the class because I’m an employee, so my back-up if I don’t get in is to take a Kung Fu class. I’ll be happy to practice more of either; and in fact whichever I don’t do in fall I plan to do in springtime.

I’d also really like to practice guitar this fall. I’ve practiced guitar on and off for many years, but I’m really not so good. I mostly just move on to something else before I make significant progress and get frustrated that I’m not yet good enough to really “jam.” But my plan for this fall is to practice scales and condition my fingers to be faster and to just make stuff up — melodies and lyrics — and see what I get.

Yay fall studies!!
